Backwerk (Germany)

This self-service bakery chain did quickly spread across Germany and it’s hard to not find one in any city.

Being a country known for its great variety of baked goods, you can find bakeries in Germany at every corner. When self-service bakeries started popping up in Germany, I was sceptical that this concept would make it. I was proven very wrong on that. There are several chains of this type of bakeries in Germany but probably the most common (and my, Spreepferdchen’s, favourite) is Backwerk. Apart from the usual bakery suspects like bread, buns and pastries, Backwerk offers plenty of cold snacks like all kind of sandwiches, savoury pastries, mini-pizzas, hot-dogs etc.

Backwerk is great, if you are on the run and want a quick, fresh, and not too heavy snack, if you need (plain) buns for your Sunday morning breakfast and even if you want to eat on site. Most Backwerk shops (especially the bigger ones in city centres) have tables where you can sit and enjoy your meal with a hot drink from a non-to-go mug. Speaking of drinks, of course, you can find all kinds of hot and convenience cold drinks, and some shops even have fresh orange juice. P.S. Though I am a convinced Backwerk customer when it comes to their savoury snacks and bread, for cake I’d prefer any other regular bakery.
